Chiefs add to injury woes ahead of AFC Championship Game
Kansas City Chiefs lose another key player to injury ahead of the AFC Championship Game
The Kansas City Chiefs suffered another blow to their injury-hit defense on Tuesday, as star safety Juan Thornhill was ruled out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Thornhill, the Chiefs' starting free safety, suffered the injury in the team's Divisional Round win over the Jacksonville Jaguars and will require surgery. This is a significant loss for the Chiefs, who are already without several key defensive players, including cornerback L'Jarius Sneed and defensive end Frank Clark.
The Chiefs will now be without three of their top four safeties for the AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Thornhill's injury leaves the Chiefs with Justin Reid and Bryan Cook as their only healthy safeties on the roster. Reid has been a solid performer for the Chiefs this season, but Cook is a rookie and has struggled at times. The Chiefs may need to make a roster move to add another safety before the AFC Championship Game.
The Chiefs have been hit hard by injuries this season, especially on defense. In addition to Thornhill, Sneed, and Clark, the Chiefs have also lost cornerback Rashad Fenton and linebacker Willie Gay to season-ending injuries. The Chiefs have been able to overcome these injuries and win 10 of their last 11 games, but they will face their toughest test yet against the Bengals, who have one of the most potent offenses in the NFL.
The AFC Championship Game is scheduled to be played on Sunday, January 29th at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. The Chiefs are a 1-point favorite over the Bengals, but the Bengals have won two of the three meetings between the two teams this season.
