Spin legend Muralitharan believes no one can beat his Test record
Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, has said he does not believe anyone will ever surpass his record.
Muralitharan, who took 800 wickets in 133 Tests, retired from international cricket in 2010. His record has been under threat from India's Anil Kumble, who has taken 619 wickets in 132 Tests, but Muralitharan believes he will remain the leading wicket-taker for a long time to come.
"I don't think anyone can beat my record," Muralitharan told the BBC. "I have 800 wickets and the next best is Anil Kumble with 619. I think it will be a long time before anyone can get close to my record."
Muralitharan's record is all the more impressive considering he only made his Test debut at the age of 28. He quickly established himself as one of the world's leading bowlers and was a key member of the Sri Lankan team that won the 1996 World Cup.
Muralitharan's success was built on his ability to bowl a variety of deliveries with great accuracy. He was particularly effective with his doosra, a delivery that spins away from right-handed batsmen.
Muralitharan's achievements have been recognized with numerous awards, including being named the ICC Cricketer of the Year in 2006 and being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2017. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest bowlers in the history of the game.
